Choosing the Best Registry Cleaner
With so many registry cleaning utilities on the market, it isn’t easy to decide which the best for our needs is. Matters are complicated even further when you consider that there are many bogus software packages serving the purpose of spreading spyware rather than helping to clean a system!
We’re going to look at four of the more reputable tools; RegCure, RegSweep, Registry Fix and Registry Smart. You will find hundreds of other Registry utilities, but for good reason, these are the best on the market.
All four tools are free to download from their respective websites, but they share the same premise of requiring a paid registration to unlock the premium features. You can run a full scan of your system with the trial versions, but to fix the errors, you will need a legitimate serial key.
To rank the tools, we used a scan with each to analyse how well they fared in detecting errors. As you can see below, the results were remarkably different.

RegCure returned the most errors with a whooping 898 problems reported. RegSweep, on the other hand, detected a mere 150. Between this, we have Registry Fix with 695 errors and Registry Smart with 443.
Given that the scans took place within the same 20 minute time frame, it is reasonable to assume that one of two things is happening. Either RegCure is locating errors that don’t exist, or RegSweep is missing them completely. Judging by the log files, we’re opting safely for the reliability of RegCure.
The primary concern for anybody looking to invest in a PC cleaning utility is that it does its job effectively. While RegSweep is efficient at removing the errors that it detects, it doesn’t find them all. The utility is a little too caught up in its promise of offering a complete scan within 2 minutes. That said, the fact that you can download updates from within the program makes it appealing to those who wish to stay protected from corruptions caused by developing technology.
Registry Fix and Registry Smart take up the middle ground as far as error detecting is concerned. We were impressed by the efficiency of Registry Smart which dealt with the large majority of the problems that it had raised.
The four utilities share the capability of being able to back-up and restore a registry from any given point in time. They also offer comprehensive management of the programs that should be launched on start-up. There is little to choose between the four in these departments and they all do their jobs effectively.
Registry Fix stands out for offering additional management of your Internet Explorer settings. Do you have third party add-ons scrambling for control of your toolbar? Registry Fix comes with a complete suite for handling the add-on modules in Internet Explorer, although you will have no such luck if you’re using Mozilla Firefox or any other third party browser.
In the presentation stakes, Registry Smart stands apart from the rest. It offers a clean interface with easy to understand instructions. The other tools are by no means complicated to work, but they aren’t quite as attractive on the eye. Registry Fix in particular, is a little overcooked with too many icons.
Generally speaking, we would recommend RegCure as the best solution in the Registry cleaning market. It might not look like your typical enterprise package, but it does an excellent job of sifting the bad entries from your Windows registry. And ultimately, that’s what we’re paying for.

Hi Chris,
The hardest thing to find is a top notch all in one system utility. I thought I found one with System Mechanic7 which claims to be vista compatible.(NOT)
After many hrs. of ” tech fix it solutions “which none worked. I gave up and decided to go it alone. FYI I have 11 other so called all in one programs. I’ll address that shortly.
First lets look at the initial problem, SM7 could not defrag my hard drive and my PC would lock up completely forcing a manual reboot. Second it will identify registry problems but could not repair them as claimed. After over a month of there repetitive fix it emails. I finally called them today 10/10/07 and what they told me Blew me away. “Sorry but were having compatibility with Vista for the defrag utility and the registry utilities as well. We are working on a fix and will send it out as soon as we find it”
Thanks,
Chris PIerce
i ordered pc mighty max received and installed decided that this is not what i required i deleted from my computer however it is still poping up how do i delete
this issue should be addressed to PcMightyMax support.
What should I do? I paid for the REGFIXIT.com, I still show a number of errors. I tried to get back on and get it fixed again, as I thought I bought it for a period of time. I had a problem, and the only way I could get my computer to shut off, was to unplug it from the wall, and remove the battery. When it finally shut down, I put the battery back in, and plugged it back in. I turned the computer back on, and it started with alot of typing on a black screen, and asked a question. Then, it went through the startup process. Then I got a popup which stated that there were serious errors detected and asked if I wanted to report them to Compaq. When I clicked “Don’t Sent”, the computer continued as if there were no problems. However, when I got online, I kept getting popups stating I had several system problems which coould be catastrophic to my computer. I ingored them for a while, but I finally submitted to this one and the popups stopped. Recently, I went through a problem like the one before, just not as bad. I tried to run the program, which I thought I bought, it showed that I had hundreds of problems. When I tried to fix it through the program, I couldn’t get through. What do I do? I want to fix my computer!
