How to use Autofix

Posted by admin on 16 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Computer, Configuration, Operating System, Program, Server, Windows

An Autofix program is a small application that has been designed to run on your computer system to adjust system settings, usually back to their defaults. This will eliminate the need to manually edit the registry or other settings in your computer system to fix problems. Most of the Autofix programs found online today are written using Windows Scripting Host.

There are a couple of different ways that you can run an Autofix program on your computer. The first is by selecting the button or link to download the Autofix program and then selecting “Run” rather than “Save” when the download window appears. At this point the web browser will download the files needed and run the Autofix program. Some Autofix programs will ask you if you would like to apply the repair or give you other information about the changes that it is about to make to your system. The other way that you can run the Autofix on your computer is very similar, but when you get the download window on your display you will select “Save” and choose a folder on your computer to put the application. The only advantage to this is that you can choose to run the Autofix program at a later time if it is more convenient. You can also keep a copy of the program so that if it works for you, you can correct problems on your computer in the event that they happen again.

You are going to want to be careful about running an Autofix on your computer system however as many of them cannot be undone once they are executed. Many of these Autofixes will delete files or create others depending on what they are meant to do. Also note that most of the Autofix programs will return settings to their default values so many customizations that you have done will be lost depending on what the Autofix is written to do.

There are also a few things that can cause problems when you try and run an Autofix program. It is possible that antivirus software will prevent the program from running, a browser utility may corrupt the Autofix program by modifying the text in the program, Advertisement blocking software may modify the code of the Autofix program or the scripting on your computer may need to be updated, especially if you are running an older version of the Windows operating system.

There is also a version of an Autofix program that is offered on the Microsoft website. This file, called Autofix.exe is used to scan your computer for defective AutoPlay settings. If it finds any during the scan it will attempt to set them back to their default values. Of course the download is offered for free from Microsoft, but you have to validate your version of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 before they will allow you access to the file. For more information about this Autofix in particular, be sure to visit the Microsoft Website and search for Autofix.

McAfee Uninstall

Posted by admin on 11 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Anti Virus, Antivirus, McAfee, Program, Security, Software, Uninstall

So, you have had your new computer for a few months now, and haven’t given much thought to all of those preloaded applications that were included with it. You felt confident that everything was perfect. And then it happens. Your McAfee Security Center tells you that the three month trial period has ended and it is time to pay up if you wish to continue receiving updates!Chances are you don’t want to pay for this program, especially since you have heard about the numerous good quality antivirus programs that are available on the internet for free, provided you are a home user. If this is the case, you are going to need to figure out how to uninstall the McAfee SecurityCenter so that you do not get annoying messages anymore indicating that your trial has expired. This can be a little bit tricky, so we are going to explain how this is done. When you decide that it is time to uninstall McAfee SecurityCenter, there are many other McAfee programs that are affected or involved in the process. They include programs such as McAfee VirusScan, McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, McAfee Privacy Service, McAfee SpamKiller, McAfee Wireless Network Security, McAfee SiteAdvisor, McAfee Data Backup, McAfee Network Manager, McAfee Easy Network and McAfee AntiSpyware. This procedure also only covers the instructions for Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Windows XP Home. It may be different on other versions of the Windows operating system.

In order to completely remove the McAfee SecurityCenter, you must uninstall all other McAfee products that are present on your computer. McAfee SecurityCenter cannot be removed from your computer unless all other McAfee products are uninstalled first. To easily accomplish this you need to follow these instructions that we have provided for you.

Start by navigating to the Start menu on your desktop. Once the menu comes up, you need to click on Settings and then on Control Panel. The Control Panel window will show up on your screen. You now need to double click on Add or Remove Programs.

In the Add or Remove Programs window that appears, you will need to search through the list of programs you have installed on your computer to find McAfee SecurityCenter. Once you have located the McAfee SecurityCenter application in the list, you will need to click on it to highlight it. Then you will need to click on the Add/Remove or Change/Remove button.

You will now be presented with a window to remove the McAfee SecurityCenter, follow the prompts that it gives you. Once this has been completed, you will be prompted to restart your computer. You may choose to do this at a later time, but all of the files and settings that McAfee installed on your system will not be completely removed until you have done so.

Like all things, however, there are some cases where the simple procedure is not always the successful one. If this is the case, do not worry, you are not stuck with McAfee SecurityCenter on your computer forever! There is a way that you can manually remove McAfee SecurityCenter and we will tell you how it is done.

If there are problems with the removal procedure we covered earlier, you will need to navigate to the folder that has the .adf files used by McAfee prior to uninstalling the application. To do this, navigate to the Start menu on your computer’s desktop and select My Computer from the list that comes up. Then you will want to navigate to C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\Agent\app. Once you have found this folder and are viewing the files within it, you need to right click on any files that end with .adf and select Delete from the menu that appears. If you are asked if you want to send the files to your Recycle Bin, be sure to select Yes. Now that you have removed the .adf files used by the McAfee products installed, you should be able to successfully remove the McAfee applications using the Add or Remove Programs menu in the Control Panel. If you need detailed instructions, read the above paragraphs that give you this procedure in more detail.

If your computer has McAfee 2005, 2006 or 2007 products installed on it, there is an easy to use removal tool that McAfee provides for download from their website. Now we will go through this procedure quickly.

First you will need to open up a web browser and download the removal tool from here. Once you have been presented with the File Download window, select Save and save the file to any folder on the computer. Now you will need to navigate to the folder where the file is saved and double click on MCPR.exe. Now click on Run and a command line window will be displayed and then close on its own. Be patient when waiting for the command line window to be displayed as it may take a while and you do not want to open multiple instances of this program. Once the removal tool has finished running on your system, you will be asked to reboot the machine. Press Y on the keyboard and wait for your computer to restart. Once it has restarted you will notice that McAfee products have been removed from the system!

Sonic Update Manager Problem

Posted by admin on 11 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Program, Software, Update

Alright, so you have just received your brand new computer that has been shipped to you from the manufacturer or that you have picked up in a retail store. If it is like most computers, it has been preloaded with a ton of programs. There are probably a few programs that have been included that you are going to enjoy and want to use, but there is once instance in which the software, which has not been completely installed properly can be more of a hassle than it is worth! You have decided that you would like to use the software already installed to burn your very first DVD using that fancy new DVD burner that came with your system. You search through the programs and find among the list, Roxio Sonic DVD Creator software that has been installed on your computer from the manufacturer. Perfect! You double click the icon with anticipation rising as you tear open your new package of burnable DVD’s only to be presented with a window showing that Windows is configuring Sonic Update Manager. No sweat! This is probably just because it is loading up for the first time, right? Well maybe not. Suddenly you are presented with a screen that indicates the feature you are trying to use is on another CD-ROM or removable disk that is not available! Your heart sinks, and things are not looking promising for that shiny new DVD you have in your hand. Your computer is asking you to insert a CD into the CD-ROM drive, that you don’t have! In frustration you select OK even though you do not have the CD it is asking for and finally you are presented with at window that says the installation package for the Sonic Update Manager cannot be found. It tells you to try the installation again, even though you have not been supplied with the software from the manufacturer! The worst part of it all is that after selecting the OK button on this window, the application launches and looks like it may work. However, cancelling out of the error window just brings up more error messages. As long as you have the Roxio Sonic DVD creator software open, the computer just keeps popping up with new error messages over and over again, making the software completely useless.Just take a breath and relax for a moment. There is good news! This is a known problem with the Sonic Update component in the InstallShield Software used by Roxio to package their product and we know how to fix it! The fix for this problem can be downloaded from the makers of InstallShield. There is a solution sold by the makers of InstallShield called FLEXnet Connect. This is a solution that allows vendors to help stay connected with their customers after they install the vendor’s applications. This solution helps vendors offer updates for their applications to customers that have installed them, but it is also recommended that software vendors build in an option to disable automatic update checking. This can often be found in the application’s menu options. If your application does not have this option, Macrovision, the makers of InstallShield have created a tool that can disable the automatic update checking feature. This tool is called the Software Manager. The Software Manager is a utility that will list all the applications that are currently using FLEXnet Connect on your computer and the FLEXnet Connect’s status with that application. Allowing you to disable any applications that are having problems with the FLEXnet Connect features.

To check if your computer already has the Software Manager installed, go to your Start menu to see if the Software Updates or Program Updates shortcut is listed. If this is the case than the Software manager is installed. If you do not have the Software Manager installed, follow these instructions to download and install it.

First off, you will need to go to the InstallShield website and download the FLEXnetConnect 6.0 SDK to your desktop. Once you have completed the download, double click on the icon flexconnectsdk.exe on your desktop and follow the instructions the come up on your screen in order to install the SDK which includes the Software Manager. Once it is installed, you can run the Software Updates shortcut to start the Software Manager. You should now be able to use the Roxio Sonic DVD Creator as this has installed the features it needed!

An alternate method to fix the problem, although more involved is to unistall Sonic Update Manager, download and install InstallShield from the InstallShield website and then go to Sonic’s webiste and download and install the Sonic Update Manager.

After following either solution above, you can test the application to see if everything is working by opening the Sonic Digital Media program on your desktop, selecting Help and then Update. If the updates are being received then everything is working fine!

Application Octet Stream

Posted by admin on 11 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: MIME, Program

A MIME attachement that is sent with the content type application/octet stream is a binary file that is typically an application or a document that must be opened by a particular application. For example a spreadsheet or word document are two examples of this type of file. If the attachement has an extension associated with it, you can sometimes use that to tell what type of file it is and what kind of program is needed to open that file. For example, a file with the .exe extension associated with it is a program that is executable in either DOS or Windows operating systems. On the other hand, a .doc extenstion would suggest that the file is a Microsoft Word document and needs to be opened in Microsoft Word in order to maintain its formatting. It doesn’t really matter what type of application/octet stream you are talking about, the file is usually not going to be viewable in an email, Usenet or World Wide Web program. If you are using a workstation based client such as Outlook, the program should be able to download the attachment to a folder on your computer. You must then use the proper application that is intended for files of that type in order the view its contents. There are also other file attachments that can be found in emails that will have different sub-types such as application/postscript, application/x-macbinary and application-msword. These files are similar to application/octet stream but apply to specific types of files. An octet generally represents an eight-bit quantity and can range in mathematical value from 0 to 255. In computer networking, an octet is usually the same as a byte, exept on coumputer systems that do not use the same amount of bits in their bytes. Octets are most commonly refer to any of the four bytes of an Ipv4 address. In web browsers, the MIME type application/octet stream refers to a generic HTTP byte stream.

MIME messages can represent almost everything including text, pictures, sound, video and other application specific data. For this reason, these files are often useless to you unless you can download the email attachments to your computer and have a program installed that is capable of viewing the file properly. There are many great online resources to help you determine which programs are required for various different filetypes. A quick search in any search engine will usually get the information that you need.

A quick search online for application/octet-stream will also quickly reveal that many computer administrators and users have problems handling files of this type through their mail servers and email clients. Unfortunately because the problems associated with these files can be so vast, there is no one answer to help you solve all of your problems. Instead, your best bet is to search for others that have had the same issues as you and see if they have been able to find a solution to their problems. Online forums are a great place to start when trying to find this information.
