A computer registry controls all of the settings and configurations that you’d come to expect from your Microsoft Windows operating system of choice. If a computer couldn’t remember our user settings, we wouldn’t have much purpose for it. This may have been the case thirty years ago, but thankfully we’ve moved on and the presence of a computer registry has helped to organize the operations that we perform on Windows.

So how does a computer registry work? And when do we know that there’s a problem with it? Basically, the registry is divided in to between four and six computer registry hives. These are like subfolders, allowing the user to view settings for various aspects of the computer more conveniently.
